Where to start! What an amazing day. I know a picture says a thousand words - so tonight I want to speak mostly with the pictures of the first day. Our initial meeting with the children's social workers went very well. They said they were excited about being adopted. Alot of the time was spent talking of their older brother. They plan to arrange a meeting with the older brother who we want to reassure he can remain in contact and that we will love Anyi and Jose. He is almost 16 and has been their primary care giver for part of their life sacrificing everything for them. He has agreed to the adoption, but we know they will miss one another.
With about 7 hours of having Anyi Camila and Jose Luis in our family our first impressions are:
Anyi Camila - is very sweet and nurturing, not just of Jose, but also of Makenzie and Isaiah already. We were told she is shy, but has not shown that to us. She has been very interactive, affectionate and has the most amazing smile- complete with dimples. She is very bright and has picked up the rules for games easily. Anyi Camila so far is constantly trying to help with everything that needs to be done around the apartment. She is definately a girly girl!
Jose Louis (yes he wants us to use both names :-) was very shy in our first day, but his social workers said he is very out going- so we are waiting for him to warm up to us. He was getting more interactive as the day went on. Also wanted to help with the work around the house. He has very curly hair, is kind, but we sense a bit of a stuborn streak!
This first day was much smoother than the last time we came to Colombia. This one will either be easier or we are experiencing the calm before the storm! We were very surprised when Anyi brought us a cd with around 150 photos from her time in the orphange - we looked at all of them together while she explained many things we did not understand. Each of them came with quite a bit of clothes this time. As I was looking at Anyi's things in her backpack, I came across an small photo album made of contruction paper. The photos inside were zerox copies of originals, as Anyi began to explain each photo my heart almost stopped. The first picture was her Mami who had been killed posing with Anyi at about 4 years old. There were pictures of her brothers, aunt, grandmother and a picture of her first communion with her Godparents, and more...... Very hard not to weep for what she has been through. These photos will be as precious as gold when she is grown. Yet all they have been through they seem happy and well adjusted. What a blessing God has allowed us to be part of their lives.
Why "Eight Is Not Enough"?
When we were younger, there was a television sitcom that was called "Eight is Enough". The television watching world was entertained with the thought of a family with eight children. Most of us were shocked at the prospect of such a large family- myself included! Then ever so slowly, God began to work on our hearts, until we surrendered to Him all of our lives- yes even gave Him sovereign control over the size of our family and He has blessed us immeasurably, with eight biological children. Each of these children have been an amazing gift to us and we cherish each of them. And we praised God for them and felt to ourselves "eight is enough" - at least for a time.
Then God began to stir our hearts. It was as if He spoke to say to us "these 8 precious children I have given to you, but what have you given to my orphans in return?" A burden began to build on our hearts to adopt. We knew that for us God still had other plans for us as parents if we would be faithful to His calling- that eight is not enough. And so, we followed this call to adopted and He has continued to blessed us through adoption. First a sibling group of three from Soacha, Colombia. They joined our family in November, 2008. In May 2010, we adopted twin infants from Texas. In September of 2012 we were privileged to return to Colombia and adopt a sibling group of two from Cali. At this time, we anxiously wait for our travel date to depart for China where a very special girl and boy wait for their forever family. By the time they all reach adulthood, we will have had the amazing privilege to be parents of children in our home for a half century. Our life is full beyond measure, beyond our wildest expectations, yes even beyond anything we could have ever hoped. Truly, eight is not enough. As of late we have wondered if God's plan for us as parents all along was not for eight children, but rather eight plus eight. Our heavenly Father knows and His word assures us "I know the plans I have made for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you." We trust He knows the number of His children He wants us to love and to nurture on His behalf, and whether that is eight or eighty times eight we stand ready and say speak Lord, your servants are listening and are prepared to be father and mother to your fatherless on earth.
